Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Said plainly, churches are in trouble. All churches are, but certainly Churches of Christ. Whether or not they recognize the threats they are facing is a different matter. The future is fraught with dangers. Many won’t make it.” On New Year’s weekend, 1831–32, two churches came together in Lexington, Kentucky, in what is often known today as the Restoration Movement. Among the churches that emerged from this movement were Churches of Christ, which grew in the nineteenth century and then flourished in the twentieth. At their zenith, around 1990, there were over 13,000 Church of Christ congregations in the United States with nearly 1.3 million members. Especially in the southern states where Churches of Christ were concentrated, it seemed inconceivable that they would ever face their own death. Like many communities of faith, these churches are now in rapid decline. The numbers are devastating. At the current trajectory, Churches of Christ in America, with a membership of just over a million, will be less than a quarter their current size in thirty years. As they awaken to their crisis, many of them are beginning to see themselves at the edge. This book is an elegy for those churches. But it is also a story of hope and promise. As from the “Blue Hole”—the tiny, hidden spring from which flows the San Antonio River, near where Jack Reese ministers—there is still abundant life and grace to be found flowing into Churches of Christ, waiting to be uncovered. Anyone wondering how to stem the seemingly inevitable ebb of the fading Western church will find solace and help in Reese’s account of a once-thriving fellowship of churches that, God willing, may yet emerge from the grave into the light of resurrection.

Book excerpt: In a time when cross burnings and men in white hoods appeared to be a thing of the past, a small town confronts a kind of hate it thought had long since died out... Shelby Lenoir Maynard, nicknamed Turtle, has never much trusted girls her own age, spending her days instead with her brother and his pack of friends. But when a mysterious Sri Lankan girl of Moorish descent moves to town, Turtle invites her to their secret haven: the Blue Hole. Turtle could not have imagined how much that simple gesture would alter the rest of her life, or the lives of those she loves. As tensions rise, it becomes clear there are those in Pisgah Ridge who reject the presence of anyone different-and those who would welcome the new refugee family. In just one summer-in a collision of love, hate, jealousy, beauty and a muddy swimming hole-everything changes.

Book excerpt: This bold retelling of Luke 1–2, based on Eugene Peterson’s Message translation, reads like a novel and invites readers to experience the Nativity with fresh wonder. To Eugene Peterson’s The Message Bible translation, John Blase adds his own storytelling voice, exploring the familiar events from multiple first-person viewpoints. What emerges is the intimate story of unlikely people—a frightened teenaged girl, a worried carpenter, a collection of senior citizens, a disillusioned young shepherd—meeting up with the divine as they bumble and stumble toward the realization that the little one just born is the One. This retold story of Word made flesh invites readers to react appropriately—with eyes opened wide in wonder, jaws dropped in amazement, and hearts rejoicing. The beautiful design and Amanda Jolman’s lively line drawings make this book a fitting gift as well as a Christmas tradition that families will treasure for years to come.

Book excerpt: Sexism in Narnia? Or Screwtape? Or amongst the Inklings? Many critics have labelled C.S. Lewis a sexist, even a misogynist. Did the life and writing of the hugely popular author and professor betray attitudes that today are unacceptable, even deplorable? The younger Lewis was criticized for a mysterious living arrangement with a woman, but his later marriage to an American poet, Joy Davidman, became a celebrated love story. As a writer he, along with J.R.R. Tolkien, formed a legendary literary group, the Inklings - but without women. In this collection of short essays, opinion pieces, and interviews, academics and writers come together to investigate these accusations. They include Alister McGrath, Randy Alcorn, Monika Hilder, Don W. King, Kathy Keller, Colin Duriez, Crystal Hurd, Jeanette Sears, David C. Downing, Malcolm Guite, and Holly Ordway. The resulting work, Women and C.S. Lewis, provides broad and satisfying answers.

Book excerpt: At an early age, I recall hearing many stories told by my elders about the tiny town of Blue Springs and the remarkable people who lived in and around it. I used many of these tales as bedtime stories for my children and grandchildren. Many people urged me to record these stories in writing. Additionally I noticed at an early age how highly esteemed and respected my father was in the community because of his total dedication to his medical practice and how he conducted it. I have also wanted to leave some sort of written tribute for my children and grandchildren about what remarkable people their ancestors were, especially my parents and grandparents. Finally, for a small boy, the tiny little town of Blue Springs was a natural paradise in which to grow up. Springs, swamps, a river, fields and forests abounded. I wanted to tell my children and grandchildren what it was like. I also want them to know, appreciate, and attempt to add to their genealogy. These are the reasons for this book.

Book excerpt: This book depicts life in the cotton fields of Southeast Missouri in the1930’s and 40’s (referred to by one newspaper reporter as the most poverty stricken area in the country) and more commonly known as the boot heal of Missouri. This book depicts long, hard hours, working in the blistering heat of the sun and the frigidly frozen, ice covered, cotton fields in a time where there was little work to be had and for meager pay. Migrant farm workers were confined to the less than adequate living quarters provided by farmers and landowners, and were forced to deal with hardships such as floods, famine, and suffering through the pain and frustration. In retrospect it would seem that this would be the life of someone who lived hundreds of years ago, but in reality it has not been that long. As unbelievable as some of this may sound, it is never the less true.
