This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stancetaking is inherent in verbal communication, as it is connected with the expression of subjectivity and the construction of intersubjectivity in discourse. This book presents theoretical findings in this field and their practical implications, exploring the variations in time and space of meaning negotiation processes in a large variety of communicative forms, including political and judicial discourse, journalism, fiction, private letters, informal conversations, and school debates. Some articles refer to events with a strong impact on social and political life, such as the COVID-19 pandemic or Ceaușescu’s trial. The volume’s approach is mainly pragma-rhetoric and interactional, but also interdisciplinary, promoting dialogue between stance researchers in different fields. There is a specific focus on possible applications of some key findings of stance research in improving inter-ethnic communication and the teaching of foreign languages, as well as students’ communicative abilities.

Book excerpt: Talking about space in literature and linguistics is a major challenge, not only for experts in the field of the humanities, but also for the broader public, searching for orientation clues on the vast book market. This volume offers a selection of studies which, even though reliant on shared instruments, apply these to different geographical spaces, uniting along an imaginary axis the East and the West, advancing challenging, serious and innovative analyses of prose, dramatic and film texts, belonging to literatures from various countries, but also references to the phenomenon of migration seen through the lens of spatial correspondence or the existence of a “third space” dimension in the field of teaching foreign languages. The journey the impassioned reader will undertake through this volume will undoubtedly offer both the pleasure of reading itself, and incursions into complementary cultures, an endeavour completed by the unique mechanism of a spatiality which produces knowledge. Any reading engaged in through the lens of space implicitly becomes a form of owning and assuming the latter.

This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a linguistic research study of trade names, especially names of firms (in the production and services sector), shops, eating/drinking houses and accommodation locations. It identifies and analyses the onomastic behaviour characteristic of the field of trades in contemporary Romanian public space, in addition to delineating a representative naming pattern for every subcategory of commercial onomastics investigated, according to three coordinates: (1) lexical and grammatical structure, (2) semantics (pointing out different levels of meaning), and (3) language preference. Methodologically, this book relies on the theoretical configuration provided by onomastics, functional, cognitive and generative grammar, semiotics (in the interpretation of trade names as iconic, indexical and symbolic signs), and pragmatics (observing that trade names underlie speech acts). Moreover, the study also refers to psycholinguistics, underlining the cognitive and affective mechanisms that are involved in the creation and use of trade names. The way in which commercial designations behave in society (especially how they contribute to the characterisation of a community both linguistically and culturally) is analysed using the tools of sociolinguistics. From the same point of view, the current context of trade names is also described, with reference to the influence of the English language and the American sociocultural mindset (as instruments of globalisation) on the Romanian language and culture, and particularly on the unprecedented development of commercial onomastics. The methodology employed in this book furthermore includes theoretical precepts specific to linguistic polyphony, emphasising the similarity between trade names and unconventional anthroponyms (particularly nicknames and virtual names). Postcolonial studies, and post-communist studies, as a branch of this field of research, also play a role here. Finally, the reference to translation studies is made in order to be able to define trade names as cultural mediators in contemporary Romanian public space.

Book excerpt: An old friend of the Daly family is murdered in a crowded Romford betting shop and yet there are no witnesses. The police are convinced that this is a vigilante killing of a paedophile and the only way to prove them wrong is for Jack Daly to find out who killed Bernie Woolaston and why. The cold-blooded murder triggers a chain of events that takes Jack back to the east end of London - back to that perilous world where his life could be in danger if the wrong person finds out who he really is. Not everybody is who they seem in this fifth book in the Jack Daly series and, in a bloody and taunt ending, Jack comes face-to-face with his past. Deathbed Confessions is Peter Larner's most popular novel and followers of the Jack Daly series of mysteries have waited eight years for the sequel. If you liked Deathbed Confessions, then you will love Deathbed Betrayal.

This book was released on 2006-09-13 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing the work undertaken in Vol. 1 of the History of the Literary Cultures of East-Central Europe, Vol. 2 considers various topographic sites—multicultural cities, border areas, cross-cultural corridors, multiethnic regions—that cut across national boundaries, rendering them permeable to the flow of hybrid cultural messages. By focusing on the literary cultures of specific geographical locations, this volume intends to put into practice a new type of comparative study. Traditional comparative literary studies establish transnational comparisons and contrasts, but thereby reconfirm, however inadvertently, the very national borders they play down. This volume inverts the expansive momentum of comparative studies towards ever-broader regional, European, and world literary histories. While the theater of this volume is still the literary culture of East-Central Europe, the contributors focus on pinpointed local traditions and geographic nodal points. Their histories of Riga, Plovdiv, Timişoara or Budapest, of Transylvania or the Danube corridor – to take a few examples – reveal how each of these sites was during the last two-hundred years a home for a variety of foreign or ethnic literary traditions next to the one now dominant within the national borders. By foregrounding such non-national or hybrid traditions, this volume pleads for a diversification and pluralization of local and national histories. A genuine comparatist revival of literary history should involve the recognition that “treading on native grounds” means actually treading on grounds cultivated by diverse people.

Book excerpt: The volume brings together fifteen papers focusing on the morphosyntax of different Romance varieties. It is based on papers presented at the workshop bearing the same title held at the University of Bucharest in November 2015 and is dedicated to Professor Martin Maiden of the University of Oxford in honour of his 60th birthday. The contributions tackle different theoretical issues concerning current linguistic theory (relevant both for comparative and diachronic approaches), including parameters, features and their hierarchical organization, word order changes, the level of verb movement in different varieties, inflected infinitives, clitic placement and clitic doubling, ethical datives, and personal subject pronouns, among others. As such, the volume represents diverse theoretical approaches to addressing a number of key morphological and syntactic issues in the morphosyntactic development of the Romance languages, drawing on modern research methods and current linguistic theory, with a clear preference for parametric syntax. The most significant areas of grammar are well-represented here. The volume will appeal to advanced graduate and postgraduate students in diachronic linguistics, theoretical linguistics, and Romance linguistics, as well as researchers in the fields of historical and typological linguistics, morphosyntactic theory, and the history of the Romance languages.

Book excerpt: "Types and stereotypes" is the fourth and last volume of a path-breaking multinational literary history that incorporates innovative features relevant to the writing of literary history in general. Instead of offering a traditional chronological narrative of the period 1800-1989, the "History of the Literary Cultures of East-Central Europe" approaches the region s literatures from five complementary angles, focusing on literature s participation in and reaction to key political events, literary periods and genres, the literatures of cities and sub-regions, literary institutions, and figures of representation. The main objective of the project is to challenge the self-enclosure of national literatures in traditional literary histories, to contextualize them in a regional perspective, and to recover individual works, writers, and minority literatures that national histories have marginalized or ignored. "Types and stereotypes" brings together articles that rethink the figures of National Poets, figurations of the Family, Women, Outlaws, and Others, as well as figures of Trauma and Mediation. As in the previous three volumes, the historical and imaginary figures discussed here constantly change and readjust to new political and social conditions. An Epilogue complements the basic history, focusing on the contradictory transformations of East-Central European literary cultures after 1989. This volume will be of interest to the region s literary historians, to students and teachers of comparative literature, to cultural historians, and to the general public interested in exploring the literatures of a rich and resourceful cultural region."
