Book excerpt: Newbery Honor–winning, New York Times–bestselling, and as full of fun and adventure as it is of deeper family issues. School’s out for summer, and Penny and her cousin Frankie have big plans to eat lots of butter pecan ice cream, swim at the local pool, and cheer on their favorite baseball team—the Brooklyn Dodgers! But sometimes things don’t go according to plan. Penny’s mom doesn’t want her to swim because she’s afraid Penny will get polio. Frankie is constantly getting into trouble, and Penny feels caught between the two sides of her family. But even if the summer doesn’t exactly start as planned . . . things can work out in the most unexpected ways! Set just after World War II, this thought-provoking novel also highlights the prejudice Penny’s Italian American family must confront because people of Italian descent were “the enemy” not long ago. Inspired by three-time Newbery Honor winner Jennifer Holm’s own Italian American family, Penny from Heaven is a story about families—about the things that tear them apart and the things that bring them back together. Includes an author’s note with photographs and background on World War II, internment camps, and 1950s America, as well as additional resources and websites. Booklist: “Holm impressively wraps pathos with comedy in this coming-of-age story, populated by a cast of vivid characters.”

Book excerpt: God meant for two soulmates, Bill and Linda, to meet, marry, and spend over fifty-seven years together before God's plan for Linda on earth was at its end, and she went to join Him and Jesus in Heaven. The evening of December 20, 2018, Linda was called to Heaven after losing a three-and-a-half-year battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). The day after Linda passed, Bill's daughter, Julie, and grandkids were visiting. Julie happened to notice two books by Sarah Young sitting on a shelf under the coffee table. The books had been placed there by Linda. One of the books was Jesus Calling, a book of "Devotions for Every Day of the Year." A ribbon, used as a bookmark, was placed in the book for the date Friday, December 21, the day after Linda died. There was no explanation for the ribbon's being there since Linda had not read from that book for some time, perhaps as much as a year. Bill believed that the ribbon was placed by Linda sometime in the past for him to find on that very day, the day after she died. The devotion for that day, December 21, starts out with the words, "MY PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE is unfolding before you." Bill believed that he was to find that book, Jesus Calling, marked with a ribbon on that page, and that God was reminding him that He had a plan for his life. Almost immediately, Bill said, "I am going to write a book." He believed he received an inspiration from God through Linda to follow a new path for him. This book is about Bill and Linda's life together, how they met, fell in love, and became soulmates, and the many coincidences in their life before and after Linda was to "Go Gently into the Night." They came to call those coincidences, "God Winks."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My BA in Psychology, Stanford, in 1954 prepared me for marriage and a family, but little more. Before marriage, I was a Social Worker in Santa Cruz administering AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children). In the mid-sixties, when the children were in school, I administered AFDC for Santa Clara County. In the early seventies, I went to San Jose State University for an elementary school credential. In 1975 I began the two year masters program in Marriage and Family Counseling at the University of Santa Clara. The program was humanistic orientated and the perfect fit for me. As an intern, I joined the newly formed Child Sexual Abuse Treatment Program. As an intern, one need 3000 hours of practicum, 500 hours of personal therapy and completion of at least one years of a masters program before being eligible for licensure. There I stayed in San Jose, for 17 years, becoming a staff counselor until I went into private practice. I still see clients after 37 years. The philosophy of Hank Giarretto, who founded the treatment program, was to treat the whole family. The focus was incest families. Hank pioneered treating sex offenders along with the rest of the family. At the pinnacle, there were more than 60 satellite programs around the world, patterned after Hanks pilot program. All my stories are true although names and places have been scrambled. Not all my clients were from incestuous families. In all cases, there was at least some component present similar to incest families. My hope is that people reading this will learn more about themselves and others. I remain optimistic that people instinctively drive to become more whole, and that there is a flow between their conscious and unconscious selves. The first courageous step is to walk into the counseling office to ask for help. I know people are making progress when they take what they have learned and practice it at home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book-length study of how point of view is manifested linguistically in dramatic texts. It examines such issues as how readers process the shifts in viewpoint that can occur within such texts. Using insights from cognitive linguistics, the book aims to explain how the analysis of point of view in drama can be undertaken, and how this is fruitful for understanding textual and discoursal effects in this genre. Following on from a consideration of existing frameworks for the analysis of point of view, a cognitive approach to deixis is suggested as being particularly profitable for explaining the viewpoint effects that can arise in dramatic texts. To expand on the large number of examples discussed throughout the book, the penultimate chapter consists of an extended analysis of a single play. This book is relevant to scholars in a range of areas, including linguistics, literary studies and cognitive science.
