Book excerpt: A fresh as a daisy coming-of-age story for the pre-teen set, one of Newbery Medal-winning author Beverly Cleary’s beloved classics. Barbara can hardly believe her older sister is getting married. With all the excitement of wedding plans going on, Barbara can't help dreaming of the day she will be the bride. She can't wait to fall in love. But as the big day gets closer, wedding planning often turns into family arguments. Even the bride and groom are bickering over details, and Barbara's fun-loving sister is turning into a very practical, grown-up person. Weddings are fun, but all this serious stuff is scary enough to make Barbara think she's not going to be rushing into a serious romance any time soon.

Book excerpt: "The Cullman Democrat was established about 25 years after the first newspaper to publish in the town named for the famous German settler, John G. Cullman. While it came relatively late on the scene, its circulation soon grew to match that of the most successful Alabama weekly newspapers. The Democrat was first published by Major W.F. Palmer in June of 1901. Palmer sold the paper to R.L. and J.E. Griffin in 1902, but by the end of January of 1903, the paper was purchased by Joseph Robert Rosson. The Democrat remained in control of the Rosson family for man years after."--Publisher's description

Book excerpt: It's been called ""profane,"" ""offensive,"" and deemed ""intolerable"" to consider its literal meaning part of the scriptural canon. Such is the hard-fought history of the Song of Songs: no other book has been so maligned, simply for existing in the Bible. In truth, the Song is exactly as it appears: an intensely passionate expression of romantic love, ascetic and sexual, between two lovers. The poetry is structured in two anti-symmetric halves: a chiasmus. The Song's lovers are forever imprinted as timeless emblems for this flawless - except godless - love; and the divine Hand enriches the Song symbolically, creating an allegorical overlay with spiritual instruction. The literal story-line and interwoven allegorical messages coexist effortlessly: rooting the Song on Earth does not limit it reaching to Heaven. The spiritual lessons imprinted in the Song are simple, profound and highly relevant to the 21st century disciple; and the manner in which they can be seen to emerge from the symbology, fascinating.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a compelling exploration of all things female, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Bride celebrates the defining connections among women and honors their differences. Each chapter reveals the actions through which a woman connects with herself, with her family, with members of her community, and with other women--from quinceanera parties commemorating a Hispanic girl turning 15, to pre-wedding henna ceremonies in the Middle East, where the hands and feet of the bride and her party are lavishly painted for her special day. Readers also will learn about such American traditions as the debutante ball, as well as the coming of age rituals of Mende girls in Sierra Leone. Gorgeous photographs from the National Geographic archive portray these women and their customs across time and around the world. Remarkable stories and anecdotes from anthropologist Joanne Eicher complement the profiles written by Lisa Ling, who as host of the weekly television program National Geographic Explorer, has traveled the world, observing and documenting rituals both ancient and emerging, from her exceptional perspective as a journalist. Together these accomplished authors provide a fascinating look at the historical, cultural, emotional, and personal impact of women's rituals and ritual practices. Provoking a range of emotions--reverence, sadness, joy, and shock--Mother, Daughter, Sister, Bride puts women in perspective in the modern world, in multiple situations and on all levels.

Book excerpt: My father enlisted with the United States Army Air Forces in 1942, at the age of 21. He was assigned as an Aerial Gunner to the 5th Air Force, 43rd Bombardment Group, known as Ken's Men, in the 403rd Bomb Squadron nicknamed the Mareeba Butchers. He participated as a Tail Gunner in a B-24, in more than 50 missions in the skies over the Southwest Pacific during WWII. The morning of March 7th, 1945, during a bombing run at Balete Pass, on the Phlippine island of Luzon, his plane encountered heavy clouds and crashed near the top of a mountain, his plane splitting in two. Of a crew of eleven, only five men survived ..the pilot, co-pilot, navigator, bombardier and the tail gunner. This book contains my father's memories of his survival. He wrote it down forty four years later. I've read his story many times after he passed away, and I decided to transcribe his words into this book. One can only wonder about the thousands of individual war stories that remain untold.
