"All endings are also beginnings. We just don't know it at the time..." Eddie is a grizzled war veteran who feels trapped in a meaningless life of fixing rides at a seaside amusement park. His days are a dull routine of work, loneliness, and regret. Then, on his 83rd birthday, Eddie dies in a tragic accident, trying to save a little girl from a falling cart. He awakens in the afterlife, where he learns that heaven is not a lush Garden of Eden, but a place where your earthly life is explained to you by five people. These people may have been loved ones or distant strangers. Yet each of them changed your path forever. One by one, Eddie's five people illuminate the unseen connections of his earthly life. As the story builds to its stunning conclusion, Eddie desperately seeks redemption in the still-unknown last act of his life: Was it a heroic success or a devastating failure The answer, which comes from the most unlikely of sources, is as inspirational as a glimpse of heaven itself. The book seeks to explore how that question has been answered in American popular culture. It begins with five framing essays that provide historical and intellectual background on ideas about the afterlife in Western culture. These essays are followed by over 100 entries, each focusing on specific cultural products or authors that feature the afterlife front and center. Entries topics include novels, film, television shows, plays, works of nonfiction, graphic novels, and more, all of which address some aspect of what may await us after our passing. This book is unique in marrying a historical overview of the afterlife with detailed analyses of particular cultural products, such as films and novels. In addition, it covers these topics in nonspecialist language, written with a high school and college audience in mind. The book provides historical context for contemporary depictions of the afterlife addressed in the entries, which deal specifically with work produced in the 20th and 21st centuries.

This little book consists of personal and sometime private letters between three brothers who realize their own lives may soon come to an end. The wisdom they offer is not only for their own families and friends left behind, but for others who have faced the loss of loved ones. Writing from different religious perspectives, the letters are nonetheless spiritual in the way they seek to wrest from a life lived in the face of death some wisdom for one another as well as others who have shared their struggles with life's deepest questions. When he was asked about the essence of his philosophy, Plato reportedly said, "Practice dying." These letters take his wisdom to heart in a series of heartfelt exchanges over the course of a year, concluding with each author's request for what his memorial service would be like.

Book excerpt: In January 2004, daytime television presenters Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan launched their book club and sparked debate about the way people in Britain, from the general reader to publishers to the literati, thought about books and reading. The Richard & Judy Book Club Reader brings together historians of the book, literature scholars, and specialists in media and cultural studies to examine the effect of the club on reading practices and the publishing and promotion of books. Beginning with an analysis of the book club's history and its ongoing development in relation to other reading groups worldwide including Oprah's, the editors consider issues of book marketing and genre. Further chapters explore the effects of the mass-broadcast celebrity book club on society, literature and its marketing, and popular culture. Contributors ask how readers discuss books, judge value and make choices. The collection addresses questions of authorship, authority and canon in texts connected by theme or genre including the postcolonial exotic, disability and representations of the body, food books, and domesticity. In addition, book club author Andrew Smith shares his experiences in a fascinating interview.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question about whether the Universe is guiding our lives has remained a mystery throughout all the ages. While scientific explorations have enabled us to venture far into space, we have come to recognize a vastness that is well beyond our human imagination. In spite of these enormous achievements, we have not come upon other life outside our small planet Earth. As the only known life-supporting planet in the universe discovered thus far, we should consider ourselves as unique and even special. This then raises the question whether we are the creation of a divine plan and if we are meant to serve a greater purpose. While we are limited to recognizing a physical world that exists around us, this book looks beyond the physical and into the possibility of a spiritual existence within the universe. Much of the world's population believes in a higher being, a divine creator, a God. This very idea provides us with a spiritual foundation from which we can venture into the silent, but by no means, lifeless realm of the universe. While we may be unaware of our purpose for being here with any degree of certainty, it should not deter us from attempting to explore this issue. By assuming that we each have a purpose to fulfill, should we be curious to know who out there determines this for each of us? How are we guided along this path and what is our connection with these unseen forces? The author attempts to explore this mystery based on both past and current practices within society. By sharing from his own unique life's experiences, he points to a possible spiritual intervention in our own daily lives. While certainly not everyone may agree with the author's assumptions, it should, however, leave the reader with a good deal of cause for thought.
