The origin of government in a state where all the people are industrious is usually simple, and so long as Venice was growing upon her lagunes, its peo ple occupied in building or navigating small boats for their neighbors, rearing islands out of those marshes, of which the most elevated in the middle was called the Rialto, the form of govern. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art, Vol. 63: January to June, 1896 It has been given to few to make so many discoveries of practical impor tance, after any one of which it might have been said he has deserved well of his country and paid his debt to man kind. He reformed the practice of vinegar-making and brewing, cured wine of its disorders, saved the silk industry not of France alone but of Europe, and showed how to drive out or to tame the germs of some of the most formidable diseases. But from the first, when he studied tartrates, to the last, when he wrestled with hydro phobia, his labors had two aspects practical importance and speculative interest; and while we recognize that no man of science has been of greater economic service to his country, we must not forget how he changed the whole theory of fermentation, and played at least an important part in establishing the germ theory of disease. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art: January to April, 1844 Venice was placed high enough to see well. Her envoys, if we make allowance for religious intolerance and national prejudice, had commonly judged with fairness both France and the passing events of her history, Themselves actors in some of the most re markable of those events, in company with them we push aside the gilded panels, and pass behind the scenes. We discover the small machinery which wrought great effects, and can sound every depth and shallow of that selfish and narrow ambition which ruled the life of Catherine of Medicis, and laid her crowned sons bound before her, her earliest victims. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine: Of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art; January to April, 1861 Such is a brief sketch of the life and death of the divinity of the Druses - a blood-stained, capricious, im pious monster, whose career furnishes them with exam ples of almost every folly, excess, and crime that can disgrace humanity. The relentless cruelty which they have shown during the recent massacres is but the natural result of their false and impious creed - but an imitation of the intolerant and persecuting spirit displayed by their deity, more than eight centuries ago, in Egypt and Syria. The vain, frivolous, snobbish side - the Dr. Hyde side - is undoubtedly presented in Arthur Pendennis. Indeed, some of the sketches of Arthur are recognizable por traits of the author-artist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art: May to August, 1846 The mere continuance, however, of the acknowledged privilege deserves the name of an abuse. No man could believe, in the eighteenth century, that the freedom from arrest of. A member's servant was necessary, or at all conducive to the mem ber's discharge of his parliamentary duty. Yet the exemption remained. The foot man of a learned civilian was released, as a privileged man, by a vote of the House, from an imprisonment which he had incur red as the father of a bastard child. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art: September to December, 1850 He had become so enamored of science that he resolved to devote his life to it. N o argu ment was of the least avail. The plan of taking orders was again urged by the mother, and the Bishop now sided with her; but the young gentleman had already adopted liberal notions on the subject of religion, and would on no account listen to them. In a letter to Turgot, of 17 7 5, he states that his creed was settled by the age of seventeen. He appears to have left the college in 1762, and an nounced his resolution to depend on his own resources - from which it may be inferred that he had seriously displeased the Bishop, though they became good friends afterward. The Biographie Universelle states that his earliest patron was the Duke de la Rochefou cauld. And that through his in uence he soon obtained some pensions but M. Arago, though he more than once describes the Duke as his best friend, makes no allusion to this circumstance of pensions, which, if true, is a rather important one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclectic Magazine: Of Foreign Literature, Science, and Art, May to August, 1844 There is a multitude around him; and this is the first fact to establish, for it speaks in favor of the writer and of the public w he has won over. Since the day when, alone and uncomprehended, he penned the words which we have quoted, Teufelsdmck made proselytes. The mad hopes, pressed, with an allowable consciousness of the power which stirred within him, in the last chapter of Sartor Resartus, ' have been largely realized. The philosophy of clothes - thanks to the good and bad conduct of the two Dandiacal and Drudge sects - has made some progress. Signs have appeared they multiply daily on the horizon. The diame ter of the two bottomless, boiling whirl pools, f has widened and widened, as they approach each other in a threatening man ner; and many readers who commenced with a smile of pity, or scorn oi' the unintelligible and tiresome jargon, the insinuations, half ironical, half-wild, oi' the dark dreamer, look into his pages, with the perseverance of the monks of Mount Athos, to see whether they cannot there discover the great thought, of which they themselves begin to feel the want. They now admire as much as they once scorned, - they admire even when they cannot understand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
