Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction by Derek Brewer. The aim of this book is to discuss the characteristics of the traditional fairy tale in Europe and North America, and various theories of its development and interpretation. The book deals with the main collections - the Grimm brothers, Hans Andersen, Perrault and Afanes'ev - and with the development of tales in various regions of Europe, including Ireland, Wales, Scandinavia, Germany and Russia, as well as India, where it was once claimed that they originated. The subject of the fairy tale is a controversial one: problems discussed here include the relationship between tales recorded from story-tellers and literary works, the importance of printed works for the spread of the tales, the growth of recent examples with a feminine approach, the spread of popular tales like Cinderella, special types like the cumulative tales, possible effects of TV, and the nature of traditional plots and characters. Above all, we have been concerned with the distribution and long survival of these tales, and the nature of their appeal. SHORTLISTED FOR THE KATHARINE BRIGGS FOLKLORE AWARD 2004. Book excerpt: Richard Dadd is a trickster, a pre-post-modern enigma wrapped in a Shakespearean Midsummer Night’s Dream; an Elizabethan Puck living in a smothering Victorian insane asylum, foreshadowing and, in brilliant, Mad Hatter conundrums, entering the fragmented shards of today’s nightmarish oxymorons long before the artists currently trying to give them the joker’s ephemeral maps of discourse. The author thinks of Bob Dylan’s “Ballad of a Thin Man,” that cryptic refusal to reduce the warped mirrors of reality to prosaic lies, or, perhaps “All Along the Watchtower” or “Mr Tambourine Man.” Even more than Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, which curiously enough comes off as overly esoteric, too studied, too conscious, Dadd’s entire existence foreshadows the forbidden entrance into the numinous, the realization of the inexplicable labyrinths of contemporary existence, that wonderfully rich Marcel Duchamp landscape of puns and satiric paradigms, that surrealistic parallax of the brilliant gamester Salvador Dali, that smirking irony of the works of Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, and Robert Indiana; that fragmented, meta-fictional struggle of Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five. John Lennon certainly sensed it and couldn’t help but push into meta-real worlds in his own lyrics. Think of “Strawberry Fields Forever,” “I Am the Walrus,” and the more self-conscious “Revolution Number 9.” In “Yer Blues,” he even refers to Dylan’s main character, Mr Jones from “Ballad of a Thin Man.” If Lennon’s song is taken seriously, literally, then it is a dark crying out by a suicidal man, “Lord, I’m lonely, wanna die”; or, if taken as a metaphor for a lover’s lost feelings about his unfulfilled love, it falls into the romantic rant of a typical blues or teenage rock-and-roll song. However, even on this level, it has an irony about it, a sense of laughing at itself and at Dylan’s Mr Jones, who knows something is going on but just not what it is, and then, by extension, all of us who have awakened to the fact that the studied Western world doesn’t make sense, all of us who struggle to find meaning in the nonsense images, characters, and happenings in the song, and perhaps, coming to a conclusion that the nonsense is the sense.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a journey through the fairy-tale wardrobe, explaining how the mercurial nature of fashion has shaped and transformed the Western fairy-tale tradition. Many of fairy tale’s most iconic images are items of dress: the glass slippers, the red capes, the gowns shining like the sun, and the red shoes. The material cultures from which these items have been conjured reveal the histories of patronage, political intrigue, class privilege, and sexual politics behind the most famous fairy tales. The book not only reveals the sartorial truths behind Cinderella’s lost slippers, but reveals the networks of female power woven into fairy tale itself.

Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, anime has consistently come into fruitful contact with themes, images and symbols associated with the fairy tale tradition. This critical text focuses on the ways in which fundamental principles of the fairy tale tradition are deployed, and hence come to manifest themselves narratively and cinematographically, in anime. Topics covered include modes of storytelling, aesthetics, as well as dramatic, ethical, psychological and social considerations. Of particular interest is the way in which allegorical commentaries on cultural and historical issues are illustrated in anime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oscar Wilde's two collections of children's literature, The Happy Prince and Other Stories (1888) and A House of Pomegranates (1891), have often been marginalised in critical accounts as their apparently conservative didacticism appears at odds with the characterisation of Wilde as an amoral aesthete. In this, the first full-length study of Wilde's fairy tales for children, Jarlath Killeen argues that Wilde's stories are neither uniformly conservative nor subversive, but a blend of both. Killeen contends that while they should be read in relation to a literary tradition of fairy tales that emerged in nineteenth century Europe; Irish issues heavily influenced the work. These issues were powerfully shaped by the 'folk Catholicism' Wilde encountered in the west of Ireland. By resituating the fairy tales in a complex nexus of theological, political, social, and national concerns, Killeen restores the tales to their proper place in the Wilde canon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is based on a true story within a privately owned forest preserved for the minds of creative people. Mossy trails with interesting twists and turns are lined with homemade fairy houses. After our familys loss of a child, we decided to gather a community of friends to use our land as a magical place to go for peace and to connect back to nature. We asked friends and family to write their own fairy character and some are used in the book. The main character in the book has suffered the loss of a sibling. She is asked to watch the family cat for five days, which she is not very interested in doing. She has many complaints about this chore being she is a doctor, mother, and wife and not in a good frame of mind, she feels overwhelmed with life. The first day, it started to happen, while going to the house to check on the cat she ventures into the woods only to discover a whole new dimension of life. While she is walking on the path looking for the cat she trips over a tree root and falls. She is not sure if she has injured her head or if what she sees next is real. She meets a figment of her imagination named Rosy. While laying on the ground the character sketches what she sees. Rosy is an old spirit who guides her each day through the woods. The next morning the fairy spirit is revealed on the sketchpad, which begins the true-life journey. Each day for five consecutive days, she returns to feed the cat and ventures back into the woods. She meets different fairies and she has unordinary experiences. Once she enters through the gate she is transformed physically into the fairy realm. She gets introduces to many of the fairy characters and is impressed with their diversity as they show their own personality and special gifts. On the last day, through the evidence of her sketched drawings, she is becomes aware that this was not just her mind playing tricks on her. For her it is a personal journey discovering how to enjoy the simple things in life just as she did when she was a child. She is shown that her sibling is still with her and lives on it the afterlife filling the emptiness in her heart. The photography in the book will make readers feel like they are taking the adventure with her. We know that nature has its own way of healing the human spirit in ways beyond our comprehension. This story is a light read and can only make you feel that love is all around us even when we feel alone. The real character and illustrator goes through the grieving process and slowly begins to heal using her creative mind. She went back to college and received awards for her drawings. It has enlightened and changed her life. We hope that the readers will find their own personal creative self while taking a walk through these pages.

As punishment for his impudence and betrayal, his clan condemned him to human form and charged him with the task of earning the trust of a single mortal. Given less than a year to achieve his goal, poor Frisque finds himself banished to the present-day world to seek his deliverance. From the age of early myth to our modern era, Fairies have inhabited a magical niche in the human imagination. Through "The Fairys Tale", the journey and musings of little Frisque provide a keen insight into the true purpose of these magical imps.
